   Baekdamsa Temple

   Baekdamsa Temple is a representative temple in Inner Seorak, situated above Baekdam Valley where the clear waters flowing from Gayadong Valley and Gugokdam meet, serving as a guidepost for climbing Inner Seorak. It was founded by Master Jajang in the 1st year of Queen Jindeok's reign (647) during the Silla Kingdom. Initially named Hangyesa Temple, it was later renamed Baekdamsa Temple because there are 100 pools between Daecheongbong Peak and the temple. Having been destroyed by fire over ten times and rebuilt in 1957 after the Korean War, the temple has a rich and tumultuous history. It houses relics such as Master Jajang's small bronze seated Buddha and a small seven-story jade pagoda bestowed to Master Seoljeong during the reign of King Injo, and includes hermitages such as Yeongsiam, Oseam, and Bongjeongam. Furthermore, Baekdamsa Temple is famous as the place where Manhae Han Yong-un (1879–1944) shaved his head and practiced Buddhism. While Monk Manhae wrote here through the agony of labor to revive the spirit of the nation and its people, former President Chun Doo-hwan and his wife are said to have spent time in exile here in repentance.
