   Haedong Yonggungsa Temple

   As one of Korea's three sacred Avalokitesvara (Gwaneum) pilgrimage sites, this temple was founded by Monk Naong during the reign of King Gongmin of Goryeo. Its original name was Bomunsa Temple, but in 1976, Monk Jeongam, who was appointed to the temple, renamed it Haedong Yonggungsa Temple after dreaming of the Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva ascending to heaven riding a dragon. It is famous as a temple where the sun rises first, and legend has it that anyone who prays sincerely will have at least one wish granted.
