   Jinjuseong Fortress

   Jinjuseong Fortress was called Geoyeolseong during the Three Kingdoms period and Chokseokseong during the Goryeo Dynasty before being renamed Jinjuseong in the Joseon Dynasty. The stone fortress wall has a perimeter of about 1,760 meters (4,359 cheok) and a height of about 5 to 8 meters (15 cheok). It is said that there were three wells, three springs, and a military storehouse inside the fortress. The First Battle of Jinjuseong is counted as one of the three great victories of the Imjin War because about 3,800 soldiers not only repelled nearly ten times as many Japanese invaders, but also defended the Honam region, Korea's granary, by holding this fortress. During the Second Battle of Jinjuseong in 1593, some 70,000 soldiers, officials, and civilians fought valiantly against 100,000 Japanese troops for 11 fierce days before all died for their country. It is also the site where Nongae showed her unwavering loyalty by jumping into the Namgang River while holding a Japanese general. Inside the fortress are Chokseoknu Pavilion, Monument for the Victory of General Kim Si-min, Uigisa Shrine, Seojangdae Command Post, Bukjangdae Command Post, Changyeolsa Shrine, Jinju National Museum, Hoguksa Temple, and an outdoor performance venue.
