Yangyang: Namdaecheon Salmon Homecoming and Dreams of Unification

Namdaecheon Stream in Yangyang is considered the first among the Eight Scenic Views of Yangyang. It is a prime river for returning salmon, with more than 70% of salmon returning to Korea swimming up this river. Between 2001 and 2004, South and North Korea engaged in salmon exchange and cooperation, releasing young salmon together and building a salmon hatchery in the Namgang River in Goseong and Namdaecheon Stream in Anbyeon, North Korea. Displaced persons living in Yangyang hold a special affection for the salmon that return to Namdaecheon Stream after enduring long hardships across the North Pacific, as they share their own yearning for home. From the emerging attractions of Jukdo Beach and Songi Valley to the beautiful Naksansa Temple, this course offers a fulfilling half-day trip to Yangyang.
