The Catholic Yeonpung Sanctuary was consecrated by the Catholic Church in 1974 at the execution site of believers such as Chu Sun-ok, Yi Yun-il, Kim Byeong-suk, Kim Mal-dang, and Kim Ma-ru, who went into hiding in Yeonpung to preserve their faith following the Sinhae Persecution in 1791 (the 15th year of King Jeongjo's reign) and were martyred during the Sinyu Persecution in 1801 (the 1st year of King Sunjo's reign).
