Head to Daegu to 'Fight Fire with Fire'!

There is a saying that heat is best treated with heat (iyeolchiyeol). Just as you sweat on a hot day to regulate body temperature, eating hot food can make you feel cool and refreshed. In that sense, a summer trip to Daegu—often nicknamed 'Daefrica' for its heat—is well worth taking. Work up a good sweat at a gukbap restaurant with over 75 years of history or a restaurant that has passed down a single chueo-tang (loach soup) menu for more than 50 years, and then look down over the Daegu Basin from the Palgongsan Cable Car. You will surely feel a refreshing chill down to your bones.

   Daegu Dalseong Park

   Dalseong Park is the oldest and most beloved park among the citizens of Daegu. Inside Dalseong Park stands Gwanpungnu Pavilion, designated as a Local Cultural Heritage Material. Gwanpungnu was once the main gate of Gyeongsang Gamyeong (the provincial government office). When the government office was established in Daegu, Pojeongmun Gate was built south of Seonhwadang Hall, and a two-story pavilion tower built on top of it was Gwanpungnu. Dalseong Park was once an earthen fortification, a sacred site of Dalgubeol, a tribal state during the Samhan period. Japanese troops were stationed here during the First Sino-Japanese War (1894–1895), and the area was turned into a park in the 9th year of King Gojong's Gwangmu era (1905). In February 1965, the City of Daegu established a new comprehensive park development plan to create the grand park seen today.
