   Geumtapsa Temple

   This temple is located halfway up Cheondeungsan Mountain (554m) in Podu-myeon, 16 km away from Goheung-eup. It is said to have been founded by Great Monk Wonhyo, though there is no clear evidence. The 'Geumtap' (Golden Pagoda) of Geumtapsa Temple is said to refer to the precious pagoda erected by King Ashoka of India. Later, after being burned down during the Jeongyu Jaeran (Japanese Invasion of 1597), it was rebuilt in 1603 by Great Monks Gunghyeon and Oksun, but burned down again in the 18th year of King Sukjong's reign (1692), leaving only the Geungnakjeon Hall.MoreLess

In particular, Jeokdaebong Peak is a warm-temperate island area in southern Korea with native colonies of 11 species of warm-temperate trees, such as machilus (silver magnolia) and fringe trees, giving it high vegetational uniqueness and plant ecological value. The forest was developed over four years from 2008 to 2011 to strengthen the conservation and management of these native plants and to provide an experience and learning space for youth.
