Walking Along the Pink Ridges

Along the mountain ridge overlooking the Unbong Fields, pink royal azaleas bloom in full glory as if bursting into flame. This colony of azaleas has a unique background story. In the 1960s, the government grazed thousands of sheep here to develop a ranch; the hearty sheep ate all the grass, leaving only the toxic royal azaleas behind. As a result, the entire area became covered in royal azaleas. To truly appreciate the vivid pink blossoms, it is recommended to take a hike from Baraebong Three-way Intersection through Palrangchi, where the azalea colonies continue, all the way to Seogeolsan Mountain.

   Currently, it houses facilities such as the National Folk Gugak Center, Chunhyang Culture and Arts Center, Chunhyang Theme Park, Folk Museum, recreational facilities, Namwon Land, accommodations, specialty restaurants, and an observatory. There are walking trails connecting to nearby spots such as Geungnakam Hermitage, Deogeumam Hermitage, Binggochi, and natural caves. Together with the water amusement park created by installing a rubber dam on the Yocheon Stream flowing in front of the wide plaza, it provides an excellent tourist and leisure destination. Seungwolgyo Bridge, which connects Namwon Tourist Complex and Gwanghalluwon Garden, evokes the mythical Ojakgyo Bridge crossing the Milky Way and creates a fantastic atmosphere.    Baraebong Peak

   Baraebong Peak is said to have gotten its name because its shape resembles an upturned barittae (monks' alms bowl). \n Featuring rounded and gentle mountain ridges, royal azaleas cluster across the grasslands here and there as if someone had deliberately tended to them. The azaleas grow to about waist or human height, beginning to bloom at the foot of the mountain in late April. An Azalea Festival is held, and visitors can enjoy the beauty of the azaleas until late May. The highlight of Baraebong's royal azaleas is the Palrangchi section, about 1.5 km from the summit. The summit of Baraebong is also regarded as a spot where you can view the entire panoramic scenery of Jirisan Mountain at a glance.    Gwanghalluwon Garden

   Originally built in 1419 during the reign of King Sejong of Joseon by Prime Minister Hwang Hui and named Gwangtongnu, it was renamed Gwanghallu in 1444 by Governor Jeong In-ji,\n who was enchanted by the beautiful scenery and likened it to the Gwanghancheongheobu Palace on the moon. It is also famous as the place where Yi Mong-ryong and Chunhyang met in the classic novel Chunhyangjeon. In the 1920s, Chunhyangsa Shrine was built within the grounds to enshrine Chunhyang's portrait, honoring the national spirit for future generations. Spanning a total area of 6,985 m² (21,113 pyeong), Gwanghalluwon Garden centers around Gwanghallu Pavilion and features various pavilions and structures including Ojakgyo Bridge (associated with the legend of the Weaver Girl and Cowherd), Chunhyang Shrine, Chunhyanggwan Hall, Wolmae's House, Wanwoljeong Pavilion, Yeongjugak Pavilion, and Samsinsan Island.    This is the battlefield and plain where Yi Seong-gye, a renowned general and regional inspector (Dosunchalsa) of the late Goryeo period, dealt a major defeat to Japanese invaders (Wae-gu).
