   Peace Dam (Hwacheon)

   Construction began in 1986 using public donations to counter potential water-borne attacks and natural disasters following North Korea's construction of the Mount Geumgang Dam, with Phase 1 completed in 1989. A total project budget of 166.6 billion KRW, including 63.9 billion KRW in public donations, went into the construction, but work was halted as claims about the threat of Mount Geumgang Dam were found to be exaggerated. Later in 2002, secondary construction began to increase the dam's height, completing the expansion in October 2005.
