Enjoying the Nature, History, and Fun of Sangju All at Once

First, you can experience history by visiting the Imran Bukcheon Battleground, a sacred patriotic site where about 900 Joseon central and local soldiers fought against the main Japanese forces during the Imjin War and died for their country, Gyeon Hwon Mountain Fortress, which is said to have been built by Gyeon Hwon, and Sangju Donghak Sanctuary, where you can learn about Korean Donghak. If you are with children, Gyeongcheondae Land, which has a snow sledding hill and a children's playground, is recommended as part of the course.

   Gyeon Hwon Mountain Fortress

   Gyeon Hwon Mountain Fortress is a mountain fortress built along the mountain peak (ridge-encircling type) and is said to have been constructed by Gyeon Hwon. The stone walls were built around the peak near Yongyu-ri, where the Hwabuk-myeon Office is located. According to local legends, "General Gyeon Hwon was based at this mountain fortress and collected all tribute (taxes) coming from the north headed to the capital (Gyeongju)," which is considered quite plausible given that the fortress is located along a key transit route.    Tomb of King Goryeonggaya (Presumed)

   The Royal Tomb of Goryeong Gaya is located at 7, Jeungchon-ri, Hamchang-eup, Sangju-si, and has been passed down orally among local residents as the royal tomb of Goryeong Gaya for about 1,500 years. In 1592 (the 25th year of King Seonjo's reign), a tombstone buried in front of the steps beneath the tomb was discovered, and based on the engraved inscription found, it was confirmed to be the Royal Tomb of Goryeong Gaya by Provincial Governor Kim Sui and Hamchang Magistrate Yi Guk-pil, among others. Afterwards, it was guarded and managed by descendants and the government, and ancestral rites are held every year on October 1st and on his birth date, March 15th.    Sangju Donghak Sanctuary

   상주동학교당

   This site was built in 1924 by Kim Ju-hui, the Namjeopju (leader of a jeop, an organizational unit of the Donghak religion), to expand the influence of Donghak. In 1925, using this place as a stronghold, efforts were made to revive the religion centering around northern Gyeongsangbuk-do such as Sangju, Mungyeong, and Yecheon, away from the eyes of the Japanese imperialists. It is the only place in the entire country that preserves buildings and relics related to Donghak, and the building style is a thatched-roof house built in the Taegeuk style (Yin-Yang style).
