Immersing yourself in a secluded mountain temple will naturally wash away urban worries. Take a pause at the legendary Hwangji Pond or stop by the mural village to stroll along cozy alleys where life and art intertwine.

   Taebaeksan Provincial Park

   Revered as the sacred mountain of the Korean nation, Taebaeksan Mountain consists of its main peak, Janggunbong (1,567m), and Munsubong Peak (1,517m). Although high, the slopes are neither steep nor rugged, making for an easy hike, and it is an earthen mountain that exudes a masculine grandeur and benevolence. Alpine plants grow naturally at the mountain summit; in spring, royal azaleas and azaleas bloom in abundance; in summer, cold and clear valley waters flow through lush forests; in autumn, colorful autumn foliage embroiders the mountain; and in winter, it showcases a snowy landscape of yew tree colonies covered in white snow. Taebaeksan is one of Korea's three sacred mountains, featuring Cheonjedan Altar at its summit, where rituals have been offered to heaven since ancient times, offering a spectacular sunrise view.    Hwangji Pond

   The source of the 1,300-ri (approx. 510 km) Nakdonggang River, this pond is located in the center of the city, and the water springing from it flows majestically through the vast Yeongnam Plain. With a circumference of 100 meters, it is divided into the Upper Pond (Sangji), Middle Pond (Jungji), and Lower Pond (Haji). Approximately 5,000 tons of water gush out daily, which was once used as a source for the tap water supply. Legend has it that a wealthy man named Hwang, who lived here, shoveled manure instead of giving alms to an old monk begging for charity, causing heaven and earth to shake and turning the site of his house into a pond.    Taebaek Sangjang-dong Mural Village

   The Coal Mine Story Village (Nambu Village) located in Sangjang-dong, Taebaek-si, is a resident-led village established through voluntary participation and talent donation by local residents since its launch as part of the 2011 Taebaek-si New Village Movement. As each alleyway came to life, the once-drab atmosphere of the village reached a new turning point, and warm love was shared through meaningful events such as the Love Briquette Drawing Contest, in which students and families participated. Korail began operating dedicated tourist trains for the central inland region on April 12, 2013.
