   Gangjin Byeongyeong Village derives its name from 'Yeong' (headquarters) of the old Byeongmajeoldosa (Army Commander) and has maintained its legacy through a long history. Surrounded by large and small mountains such as Suinsan, Seongjasan, Ongnyeobong, Byeollaksan, and Hwabangsan, it forms a natural basin fortress. Byeongyeongseong Fortress, which once oversaw the military administration of Jeolla-do, was established here, and the area achieved rapid commercial development.    Military Headquarters of Jeolla-do Province, Gangjin

   As the supreme army command headquarters overseeing the 53 prefectures and 6 garrisons of the Honam region and Jeju-do for 600 years during the Joseon Dynasty, this fortress was established when the Byeongmajeoldosayeong, originally located in Gwangsan-hyeon, was relocated here in 1417 (the 17th year of King Taejong). It is also called Seolseong because General Ma Cheon-mok, the first military commander, is said to have built it along the traces of snow after receiving a revelation in a dream. Built on flat ground, according to records such as "Daedongjiji" and "Saekji," it had a circumference of 2,820 cheok, a height of 18 cheok, 12 bastion walls, 5 ponds, 9 wells, 2 gun emplacements, 4 fortress gates, and 15 annex buildings including a banquet hall and guest house.
