Ulju Cultural Heritage Course 1

Ulju in Ulsan is a relatively inland area where you can explore both hidden cultural heritage sites and prehistoric dinosaur sites at once. It features historic sites infused with the legacy of Park Je-sang, as well as precious natural history assets in Cheonjeon-ri, home to dinosaur footprint fossils designated as Cultural Heritage Material No. 6. Be sure not to miss this course when visiting Ulju.

   Chisanseowon Confucian Academy

   치산서원

   Park Je-sang was a descendant of Bak Hyeokgeose who was ordered by King Nulji to rescue the king's younger brothers, who had been sent as hostages to Goguryeo and Wa (Japan) during the reign of King Silseong. Park Je-sang traveled as an envoy to Goguryeo and first brought back Bok-ho. He then traveled to Wa to rescue Misaheun, but was ultimately burned to death after enduring severe torture. On Chisullyeong Pass, located east of Manhwa-ri, Dudong-myeon, remain Mangbuseok Rock and Euneulam Hermitage. According to legend, Park Je-sang's wife waited for her husband alongside her two daughters until she died and turned into stone (Mangbuseok), while her soul transformed into a bird and flew away to hide. King Nulji later posthumously granted Park Je-sang the title of Daeachan and honored his wife as Gukdaebuin. Chisanseowon Confucian Academy is where the couple's spirit tablets are enshrined to honor their loyalty. MoreLess

   Bangudae Petroglyphs in Daegok-ri, Ulju

   울주 대곡리 반구대 암각화

   Petroglyphs are rock carvings and drawings made by prehistoric people depicting various aspects of daily life. They were mainly created on large rocks in communal sacred areas, where people are believed to have gathered to hold various rituals. The Bangudae Petroglyphs in Daegok-ri, Ulju, are carved on a site known as 'Geonneo Gakdan' along Daegokcheon Stream, a tributary of the Taehwagang River. The main rock face with the concentrated engravings measures 10 meters wide and 3 meters high.    Cheonjeon-ri Dinosaur Footprint Fossils

   These dinosaur footprint fossils are precious natural history records left by medium- and large-sized dinosaurs that lived in the Early Cretaceous period, approximately 100 million years ago. Dinosaurs at the time are known to have lived in river plains across savanna regions influenced by tropical trade winds, experiencing alternating wet and dry seasons in a subtropical climate. The fossils here are preserved on a rock surface spanning approximately 1,750 square meters, with around 200 footprints remaining, including tracks from ten sauropods (such as the large herbivorous Ultrasaurus) and one ornithopod iguanodontian dinosaur.
