   Sangumburi Crater

   Featured as an impressive location in the movie 'Love Wind Love Song,' Sangumburi Crater is Natural Monument No. 263 and a crater with a circumference of over 2 km. It appears in a scene where Jang Dong-gun (Tae-hee) and Ko So-young (Young-seo) walk while exploring inside Sangumburi Crater. While there are around 360 parasitic cones across Jeju Island, all other volcanoes except Sangumburi Crater have craters shaped like inverted bowls; Sangumburi Crater is the only one on Jeju formed when an explosion blew away the existing rock without spewing lava or volcanic ash, leaving only the crater cavity behind. Such a volcano is called a maar, and it is the only one of its kind in Korea and a very rare type of volcano worldwide. MoreLess

   Seongsan Ilchulbong Tuff Cone

   성산일출봉

   Standing 180 meters above sea level, Seongsan Ilchulbong Tuff Cone is a volcanic cone formed about 5,000 years ago by an underwater volcanic eruption in the ocean, a rare occurrence among Jeju's many volcanic craters. When lava mixed with water, explosive eruptions shattered the lava into fine volcanic ash, accumulating in a cone shape around the crater. Although it was originally a volcanic island, sand and gravel accumulated between the island and the land around Sinyang Beach, connecting it to the mainland. At the summit of Ilchulbong sits a crater with a diameter of 600 meters, a crater floor elevation of 90 meters above sea level, and an area of 214,400 square meters. A scene from director Lee Jang-ho's movie 'A Sketch of a Rainy Day' (Lee Jang-ho's Alien Baseball Team) was also filmed here. The crater was once used for farming, but today it is covered in silver grass fields, offering a close view of Udo Island as if it were within arm's reach. MoreLess
