Chungjuho Lake Course: A Place to Stop and Rest

A massive artificial lake transformed the landscape of Chungju. Although it is now an iconic scenic attraction of Chungju, Chungjuho Lake was initially unfamiliar even to local residents. Three ways to enjoy this lake are exploring the Chungjudam Dam Water Culture Pavilion, observatory, and dam crest road; taking a leisurely drive along the lakeside road and mountain roads overlooking the lake; and enjoying the closest view of the water aboard an excursion cruise.    Tangeumdae Terrace and Tangeumdae Park, Chungju

   Tangeumdae was originally a hill called Daemunsan, boasting splendid scenery with the Namhangang River flowing gently around rugged cliffs and dense pine forests. The name Tangeumdae originates from the story that Ureuk, one of the three greatest musical masters in Korean history during the reign of King Jinheung of Silla, played the gayageum here. Around 1,400 years ago during the Silla Kingdom, Ureuk, a musician from the fallen state of Gaya, was among many Gaya people forcibly relocated here. At that time, Ureuk made the cliff rocks of Tangeumdae his home, spending his days playing the gayageum while admiring the landscape.    Chungjudam Dam

   Chungjudam Dam, the largest concrete multipurpose dam in Korea, connects Jongmin-dong and Jodong-ri, Dongnyang-myeon in Chungju-si. It blocks the Namhangang River to secure water resources, prevent flood damage, and generate electricity. The left bank crest of the dam features a water exhibition hall, memorial tower, and rest area, while the right bank crest features a waterwheel resting area, a helipad, and Chungjunaru Ferry Terminal where visitors can board the Chungjuho Lake cruise ship. Chungjuho Lake, created by Chungjudam Dam, attracts many tourists who come to take the cruise. The dam stands 97.5 meters high, 447 meters long, with a water storage capacity of 2.75 billion square meters, and downstream of the main dam is a regulating dam measuring 21 meters in height and 480.7 meters in length.    Haneuljae Pass
