   Chungju Tangeumdae and Tangeumdae Park

   Tangeumdae was originally a hill called Daemunsan, boasting scenic beauty created by the Namhangang River winding gently around rugged cliffs and dense pine groves. The name Tangeumdae was given because Ureuk, one of Korea's three greatest musicians (Akseong) during the reign of King Jinheung of Silla, played the gayageum here. About 1,400 years ago during King Jinheung's reign, the musician Ureuk from the Gaya confederacy was among the numerous Gaya people forcibly relocated here after their country fell. At the time, Ureuk made the cliff rock of Tangeumdae his dwelling and spent his time enjoying the scenery while playing the gayageum.    At the Exhibition Hall of Chungju Goguryeo Monument, you can see the Chungju Goguryeo Monument (National Treasure No. 205), the only surviving Goguryeo stone monument in Korea. Having stood in front of Ipseok Village in Yongjeon-ri, Gageum-myeon for a long time, its value was not known to the world until 1979. It was presumed to be a memorial stele erected after King Jangsu conquered the Namhangang River basin and was named the Goguryeo Monument. Later, a protective pavilion was built, and in 2012, the Exhibition Hall of Chungju Goguryeo Monument finally opened. The exhibition hall introduces Goguryeo's heritage, tales, lifestyles, and history, along with Anak Tomb No. 3, the Gwanggaeto Stele, and the discovery process of the Chungju Goguryeo Monument.
