Exploring the Sights and Flavors of Bonghwa

Dalsil Village in Bonghwa boasts an abundance of delicious local delicacies as well as captivating surrounding scenery. Renowned as the home of Geumgangsong (Chunhyangmok) pine trees, the area is rich in pine forests and produces plenty of pine mushrooms. Just beyond the foothills of Taebaeksan Mountain lie Yeongdeok and Uljin, famous for snow crab, and the surrounding area offers diverse attractions such as Dadeok Mineral Spring and Cheongnyangsan Mountain, making it an excellent travel course for families.

   Bonghwa Cheongamjeong Pavilion

   봉화 청암정

   Located in Dalsil Village, Yugok-ri, Bonghwa-eup, this site is associated with Chungjae Gwon Beol (1478–1548, posthumous title Chungjeonggong), who passed the civil service examination in the second year of King Jungjong's reign (1507) and rose to the position of Right State Councilor (Uchanseong). During the reign of King Myeongjong, when Yun Won-hyeong ousted the three key ministers Yun Im, Ryu Gwan, and Ryu In-suk, Gwon Beol opposed this action and was consequently exiled to Sakju, where he ended his life; he was later posthumously honored with the rank of Chief State Councilor (Yeonguijeong) during the reign of King Seonjo. This pavilion was built on a turtle-shaped rock (Guam) by Chungjae Gwon Beol and his eldest son, Gwon Dong-bo, after Gwon Beol became embroiled in the Gimyo Literati Purge, settled in Yugok, and spent 15 years in seclusion devoting himself to the study of Confucian philosophy.    Seokcheongyegok Valley

   석천계곡

   Water originating from the Taebaeksan Mountain area passes Eungbangsan Mountain and Okjeokbong Peak, merging with the pristine waters flowing from the deep valleys of Bonghwa. Upon reaching Yugok-ri in Bonghwa-eup, it finally opens into a refreshing valley: Seokcheongyegok Valley. The surrounding mountains are gentle and the pine forests are lush, and because the valley is not excessively deep, visitors can easily venture deep into it without much effort.
