   Sayangseowon Confucian Academy

   Located at the entrance to Jungpyeong-ri, Pacheon-myeon, Cheongsong-gun, this academy stands gracefully at the foot of Pilbong Peak, adjacent to a dense grove of around 300 200-year-old pine trees. Sayangseowon Confucian Academy enshrines Lord Munjeong (the 12th-generation descendant of Sin Sung-gyeom, a founding contributor of Goryeo, and the founder of the Yeonghae branch of the Pyeongsan Sin clan) as its main honored figure, along with his son, Lord Munhwon, and Won Ungok in the east and west auxiliary shrines. Lord Munjeong, enshrined as the main figure, was renowned for his profound scholarship across three dynasties (Goryeo, Yuan, and Ming). He was a pioneer of Neo-Confucianism in Korea who received the official title of Geumjagwangnokdaebu from Emperor Taizu of Ming and the posthumous title of Munjeong. The name "Sayang" refers to the sunny south side of Sacheon stream, and memorial rites (hyangsa) are held annually on the 15th day of the 3rd lunar month. The hanging board of Hwahwasa Shrine inside Sayangseowon Confucian Academy is in the personal calligraphy of Baekbeom Kim Gu. MoreLess
