Taking In All of Busan's Coastline at a Glance

No visit to Busan is complete without Taejongdae, one of its must-see attractions.    Taejongdae Observatory

   The observatory stands near the southwestern end of the circular road at Taejongdae, where the horizon stretches faintly into the distance over the sea. Rebuilt in August 1999, the building covers a total of 526 pyeong (one basement level, three above ground) and houses an observation deck, a restaurant, a snack stand, and other convenience facilities. The observatory stands on the former site of a rock widely known as "Suicide Rock" — until the early 1970s, this cliffside spot had been the scene of a social problem, as people overwhelmed by extreme hardship or heartbreak would end their lives by jumping from it.    Taejongdae

   Located at the southernmost tip along a 9.1km stretch of Yeongdo's coast past Busan Bridge, Taejongdae Resort covers 542,000 pyeong, centered on a peak 250m above sea level, thickly forested with some 120 species of trees including black pine.    Taejongsa Temple

   태종사

   The temple's head monk is the venerable Doseong, and it has about 500 followers. It currently holds one relic of the Buddha's true body and two crystallized relics (jeonggol sari) donated to Taejongsa by the government of Sri Lanka in 1983, along with a Bodhi tree grown from a cutting of the tree of enlightenment.    Yeongdo Lighthouse

   Located at Taejongdae in Yeongdo-gu, Busan, Yeongdo Lighthouse was installed in December 1906 and has cast its brilliant light at the entrance to Busan Port for more than 100 years since. Due to the aging of its facilities, it was replaced with a new lighthouse structure in 2004, reemerging as a marine tourism landmark of the Busan region. The newly built Yeongdo Lighthouse consists of three buildings (total floor area 720㎡) — the lighthouse facility itself, an art exhibition hall, and a natural history museum.
