On the Way to the Sedge Craft Village

This course allows visitors to experience the rich history of Ganghwa. It features Ganghwa Hwamunseok (patterned sedge mats), Korea's only traditional sedge craft, alongside prehistoric artifacts, relics excavated from Goryeo royal tombs, local Confucian schools (hyanggyo), and ancient dolmens. Visitors can also take time to admire a smiling Goryeo-era standing stone Buddha statue.

   Ganghwa History Museum

   Ganghwa History Museum is a public museum established to preserve, research, and exhibit the cultural heritage of Ganghwa. Originally located next to Gapgot Dondae, it relocated and reopened in 2010. The permanent exhibition hall displays relics excavated from Ganghwa's prehistoric sites and Goryeo royal tombs, as well as cultural properties from local Confucian schools and traditional temples.    Standing Stone Buddha in Jangjeong-ri, Ganghwa

   강화 장정리 석조여래입상

   Located in Jangjeong-ri, Hajeom-myeon, this Goryeo-era standing stone Buddha is carved onto a thick slab of stone. Overall, it is grand with good proportions, though the large face, narrow shoulders, and oversized hands slightly affect the balance. It is now enshrined inside a protective wooden pavilion. The 2.8-meter-tall rock-carved Buddha features a large ushnisha (cranial protuberance) on its head and a round face bearing a full, gentle smile stretching from its mouth to its cheeks and eyes.    Ganghwa Hwamunseok Cultural Center

   Ganghwa Hwamunseok, Korea's only traditional sedge handicraft, is a cultural living heritage passed down since the Goryeo Dynasty and a proud national cultural asset produced exclusively in Ganghwa-gun.    Dolmen in Bugeun-ri, Ganghwa

   Designated as Historic Site No. 137, this is one of the representative burial monuments of the Bronze Age. Made of a massive capstone measuring 710 cm in length, 260 cm in height, and 550 cm in width, it is a northern-style (table-type) dolmen that serves as valuable research material for ancient history. On November 29, 2000, at the 24th UNESCO World Heritage Committee meeting in Cairns, Australia, it was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list alongside the dolmens in Gochang and Hwasun.
