A Quiet, Elegant Path to the Royal Tombs of Ganghwado

This route can be walked either as a loop through the grounds of Jeondeungsa Temple or as a direct path to the Anglican Church, depending on the time and distance you have available. It passes by Giljeong Reservoir and the tomb of Yi Gyu-bo, considered the finest writer of the Goryeo dynasty, before visiting three Goryeo royal tombs. The forest paths between the tombs are especially pleasant.

   Ganghwado came under frequent foreign incursions in the late Joseon period. In 1866, the 3rd year of King Gojong, the Byeongin Yangyo broke out; a French fleet, defeated in the battle of Jeongjoksanseong Fortress, remained for about a month before withdrawing. In 871, during the Sinmiyangyo, an American fleet successively captured Chojijin, Deokjinjin, and Gwangseongbo. In this way, Ganghwado served as the forward base when Korea opened its doors to the West in the late 19th century, and it was also a place where Western missionary activity was actively carried out.MoreLess

   The Path to the Royal Tombs is an 18km route connecting Onsu Crossroads to Garneung Tomb, allowing you to visit Goryeo royal tombs along the way. Starting from the east gate of Jeondeungsa Temple, it loops through the temple grounds, passes through the north gate of Samnangseong Fortress and along a walking trail, circles by Onsu Anglican Church, and heads toward Giljeong Reservoir. Along the way, it passes the tomb of Yi Gyu-bo, considered the finest writer of the Goryeo dynasty, before visiting three Goryeo royal tombs.
