A Journey to Remember the Noble Spirits of May 18

This is a journey to look back on the painful history of the May 18 Democratic Uprising. May 18th National Cemetery is the resting place of both the martyrs who died during the uprising and unidentified missing persons.    This park in Buk-gu, Gwangju, is also known as the May 18 Cemetery. With the launch of the civilian government, a reassessment of the May 18 Democratic Uprising took place, and concerned citizens began a movement to turn the burial grounds of the May 18 victims into a sacred site of democracy.    Gwangjuho Lake Ecological Park

   This ecological park sits near the shore of Lake Gwangju, spanning 185,124㎡ and organized into themed zones including a nature observation garden, a nature study area, a lawn rest plaza, and waterside wetlands. About 30 minutes from downtown Gwangju and easy for citizens to reach, it opened in March 2006 and has since served as a nature study site for children and a resting place for the public.    Hwanbyeokdang Pavilion

   This pavilion stands on a hill in Chunghyo-dong, along Changgyecheon Stream upstream of Lake Gwangju, in Buk-gu, Gwangju. It was founded by Kim Yun-je (1501-1572), who served as magistrate of Naju and, after retiring to the countryside, devoted himself here to educating young talent. The pavilion's name was given by Sinjam (pen name Yeongcheonja), and records in Go Gyeong-myeong's 'Yuseoseongnok' note that it was also called Byeokgandang. MoreLess
