Strolling Through the President's Villa

Built after the construction of Daecheong Dam, Cheongnamdae was a presidential retreat where successive presidents of Korea spent their vacations. Beautiful houses and paths stretch on and on against the stunning scenery of Lake Daecheong. The TV dramas 'The Kingdom of the Winds' and 'King of Baking, Kim Tak-goo,' as well as the film 'The President's Barber,' were filmed here. Alongside Cheongnamdae, it's also worth driving along Lake Daecheong or taking in the lake views from Munui Cultural Heritage Complex, Hyeonamsa Temple, and Daecheong Dam.

   Chammaja, a freshwater fish of the carp family, has soft bones and better flavor than minnows, making it a prized ingredient for dorbaengbaengi (crispy pan-fried fish). Restaurants serving dorbaengbaengi made with chammaja are correspondingly rare, and 'Guryong Restaurant' is one of the few. This local eatery, which won the grand prize at the 2006 North Chungcheong Food Competition, serves a fantastic dish of fried chammaja topped with a sweet and spicy sauce and paired with julienned ginseng and chives.    Lake Daecheong

   Lake Daecheong is an artificial lake spanning Daejeon Metropolitan City and Cheongwon-gun, Okcheon-gun, and Boeun-gun in North Chungcheong Province. Construction began in 1975 and was completed in 1980. It serves as a lifeline supplying drinking water as well as household and industrial water to the Daejeon and Cheongju areas. Nearby attractions such as Geumgang Resort, Janggye Tourist Site (Daecheong Beach Land), and Munui Cultural Heritage Complex make it easy to combine sightseeing. To get there, take the Gyeongbu Expressway, exit at Sintanjin Interchange, and head toward Daecheong Dam from Sintanjin Intersection. Driving all the way around the lake takes about 3 hours by car.    Daecheong Multipurpose Dam is a composite dam combining a concrete gravity dam and a rockfill dam, standing 72m high, 495m long, with a volume of 1,234,000㎥. From the observation deck (the Palgakjeong rest area) you can enjoy an even more beautiful view of Lake Daecheong, and the Water Information Hall on the dam's left bank offers a variety of water-themed attractions, including panoramic videos, an interactive 'Dr. Water' computer, and Magic Vision displays.
