Crossing a Bridge with a Thousand Years of History

Jincheon is home to a bridge with a thousand years of history. Nongdari Bridge, which looks like a series of connected stone piles, is a stone-stacked bridge said to be the oldest of its kind in East Asia. Jincheon is also the birthplace of General Kim Yu-sin, the foremost hero of Silla's unification of the Three Kingdoms, and Mt. Taeryeongsan, behind his birthplace, is said to be where his placenta was buried.

   Mt. Manroesan

   만뢰산

   The name is presumed to date back to the Goguryeo era, taken directly from a local place name. The mountain stands 611m high and is also called Mannosan or Iheulsan. Its main ridge marks the boundary between North and South Chungcheong Provinces. At the summit stands a jangseung (village guardian post) made by the painter Choi Yang-ho, shaped like the Chinese character for mountain (山), symbolizing that this is the highest peak in Jincheon.    Birthplace and Placenta Chamber of General Kim Yu-sin, Jincheon

   This is the birthplace of General Kim Yu-sin, posthumously honored as King Heungmu and the 13th-generation descendant of King Suro, founder of the Gaya kingdom. General Kim Yu-sin, son of Governor Kim Seo-hyeon of Manno-gun, was born in the 17th year of King Jinpyeong's reign (595) in Gyeyang village, Sanggye-ri, Jincheon-eup. A memorial stone was erected in 1983 at the spot called Janggunteo (General's Site) at the entrance to what is now Gyeyang village. About 2km northwest of here, Yeonbojeong Well, said to have been used by the governor's residence, still survives, along with Tuguibawi Rock and Chimadae, where the general is said to have practiced martial arts.
