Meeting Gosan Yun Seon-do's Ideal World

Bogildo is the island Gosan Yun Seon-do sought out as a place of seclusion after King Injo surrendered at Samjeondo during the Manchu invasion of 1636, and it still retains his legacy in its entirety. The island is also beautiful, home not only to Jungni and Tongni beaches but also to the stone-pebble beauty of Yesong-ri Beach. It also holds an ironic trace of history in Geulsseun Bawi (the Inscribed Rock), where Song Si-yeol -- Yun Seon-do's political rival -- left an inscription on his way into exile in Jeju.

   Tongni Beach

   Tongni Beach, opening out beautifully with views of Bogildo's many islands large and small, has a more masculine, dynamic feel compared to other beaches and is especially popular with young people. In front of the beach lie the many islands of the Soan archipelago, both large and small -- Mokseom, Giseom, Tokkiseom, Galmaseom, Sodo, and Dangsado.    Jungni Silver Sand Beach

   This is the best beach on Bogildo for swimming. Fine sand stretches along a long shoreline, and the slope is so gentle that even 200 meters out, the water doesn't rise above head height. The pine forest lining the beach also makes a good spot to escape the hot sun or to camp. A well-paved road connects the beach to the pier, making access convenient. \nMoreLess

   Uam Song Si-yeol's Inscribed Rock

   Song Si-yeol's Inscribed Rock refers to a rock face on the beach in front of Seonbaekdo Village on Bogildo.    Yesong Pebble Beach

   Yesong-ri is a coastal village in the southeastern part of Bogildo. Visited by 300,000 people a year, Yesong-ri is a year-round resort where blue-gray pebbles stretch 50m wide and 2km long. With its 1.4km bow-shaped pebble beach and evergreen forest, the scenery is exceptionally beautiful. Thanks to the fine trees and forest, the dark blue-green pebbles known as 'gaetdol' cover the beach, and every time the waves come in and out, you can hear a distinctive rustling, roaring sound.    Bogildo Seyeonjeong Pavilion

   Gosan Yun Seon-do (1587-1671), a mid-Joseon-era scholar-official and poet, is said to have set out for Jeju in unbearable indignation upon hearing that the king had surrendered during the Manchu invasion, but stopped on Bogildo, moved by its natural scenery.    Dongcheon Seokssil

   Dongcheon Seokssil, the realm of immortals described in Neo-Confucianism, offers a panoramic view of Buyong-dong and sits on the mountain slope facing Nakseojae directly. In a space of 3,306㎡ (about 1,000 pyeong), a single-bay pavilion, a stone gate, a stone pond, a stone spring, a stone waterfall, and a stone garden were built, where tea was enjoyed and poetry composed. In particular, water lilies were planted in the stone pond, which was divided in two with an artificial opening cut through so water could flow between them, connected by a bridge called 'Huihwanggyo.'    Mangkkeut Observatory

   Bogildo Ppyojjoksan and Bogok-ri Dinosaur Egg Beach
