Healing in the Energy of Wolchulsan

Yeongam's Gurim Village retains Sangdaepo, the departure point where Baekje's Dr. Wang In sailed to Japan with ten volumes of the Analects, one volume of the Thousand Character Classic, and skilled craftsmen to spread civilization -- and it is also a well-known historic site as the birthplace of State Preceptor Doseon. Along with Yeongam Hyanggyo, it served as a filming location for the drama 'Sungkyunkwan Scandal,' and Gichan Land, built using the energy of Wolchulsan and the clean natural water flowing through its valleys, is another must-see attraction in Yeongam.

   Dr. Wang In Historic Site

   Dr. Wang In Historic Site sits at the foot of Munpilbong, on the eastern side of Gurim Village, restored to trace his legacy as his reputation has been newly reappraised. It consists of Wanginmyo (shrine), an inner three-gate, an outer three-gate, Munsanjae, Yangsajae, an exhibition hall, a statue of Wang In, and Chaekgul (Book Cave). Of these, Wanginmyo (about 82.5㎡) enshrines his portrait and spirit tablet, and memorial rites are held there every year.    Yeongam Hyanggyo

   Located in Yeongam-gun, Jeollanam-do, Yeongam Hyanggyo is an educational institution established by the state to hold memorial rites for Confucius and various sages and to educate and enlighten local residents; it is designated Jeollanam-do Cultural Heritage Material No. 126. Covering about 1,100 pyeong, it was first built in the 2nd year of King Sejong's reign (1420) by local officials and scholars.
