A Trip to Savor the True Taste of Gulbi (Dried Yellow Croaker)

Beopseongpo in Yeonggwang is the home of gulbi (dried yellow croaker). Beopseongpo is known not only for gulbi but also as the place where Baekje Buddhism was first introduced, and it developed steadily as a government granary port from the Goryeo dynasty onward. Crossing over Daedeoksan from Beopseongpo, you reach Baeksu Coastal Road, famed as one of Korea's most beautiful coastal roads. Along with its stunning West Sea scenery, the coastal road is also renowned as a spot for watching the sunset.

   Site of the First Arrival of Buddhism in Baekje

   Jwaudu in Beopseongpo is the spot where the Indian monk Marananta first set foot after transmitting Buddhism to Baekje via Eastern Jin China in 384 CE, and the area has been developed into a tourist attraction to commemorate this. In the name Beopseongpo, 'beop (法)' refers to Buddhism and 'seong (聖)' refers to the sage Marananta. While the routes and first preaching sites of Buddhism's transmission to the Korean peninsula are well documented for Goguryeo (in the reign of King Sosurim, via King Fu Jian of Former Qin) and Silla (via Mukhoja, in the time of Nulji Maripgan) during the Three Kingdoms period, the route and first landing site for Baekje Buddhism were unclear.
