A Literary Journey Through the Novel 'Taebaeksanmaek'

Beolgyo-eup in Boseong County is the main setting of Jo Jeong-rae's epic novel 'Taebaeksanmaek' (The Taebaek Mountains). Set off on a leisurely half-day literary journey to visit the novel's real-life settings. The town center is not very large, making it a great place for a slow walking tour. There is a special thrill in encountering the novel's settings in real life, such as the old Boseong Inn, which appears as Namdo Inn in the novel, Buyonggyo Bridge (Sohwa Bridge), and Kim Beom-u's house. The Taebaeksanmaek Literature Museum is also a must-visit stop; near the museum are the site of Hyeon Bu-ja's house and the site of Sohwa's house.

   Boseong Beolgyo Hongyo Bridge

   Built by connecting arched spans, this stone bridge shows considerable variation in its outer walls and railings. Bridges of this arched, vaulted type can be found in various places, and together with Seunseongyo Bridge at Seonamsa Temple, it stands as a particularly clear example of this structural form. Vaulted bridges have existed since ancient times in both East and West, and domestic examples include Cheongungyo and Baegungyo bridges at Bulguksa Temple. Similar arch techniques can also be seen in the ceiling structures of Joseon-era stone ice storage houses (seokbinggo) found in various regions.
