An Iksan Tour Enjoyed from Ungpo Campground

Ungpo Campground, where you can enjoy the beautiful scenery of Gomgae Naru on the Geumgang River, is a place loved by countless camping enthusiasts. Step outside the campground and set off on an Iksan tour. Visit the quiet old stone-wall lanes of Hamna Village and the Seongdang Prison film set, used as a filming location. Dudong Church, built in 1929, is also a meaningful place to explore. The murals depicting the history of Seongdang Port and its hwangpo sailboats (traditional ochre-sailed boats) evoke a wistful nostalgia.

   Iksan Seongdangpogu Village has the Geumgang River to its west and was once home to Seongdangchang, a granary that managed tax grain from the Goryeo period through the late Joseon period; it was known as Seongdangpo (聖堂浦) or Seongpo (聖浦).    Dudong Church Old Sanctuary

   Designated Jeollabuk-do Cultural Heritage Material No. 179 on April 6, 2002, this building is a Korean-style (hanok) church with an L-shaped floor plan, a tin roof, single eaves, and a hipped-roof form. It was first established in 1923 through the missionary work of Harrison, but the present L-shaped church building is said to have been newly built around 1929. As an early Protestant church building reflecting both the social conditions and architectural features of its time, it is an important building for understanding the spread of Christianity in Korea and for the study of church architecture.    Ungpo Tourist Campground is located in the lower reaches of the Geumgang River, where the sun sinking into the river amid swirling flocks of migratory birds makes for a spectacular sight. Looking down at the Geumgang River from Deokyangjeong Pavilion above the campground, the shoreline resembles a bear opening its mouth to drink water, which is why the area is called Gomgae (Bear Inlet). The campground accommodates a total of 75 people and is made up of an auto-camping area and a general camping area to meet visitors' varied needs.
