A Wellness Trip to Enjoy Both Cheongpyeong Lakeside and Mt. Yumyeongsan

Gapyeong-gun is 84% mountainous, home to Mt. Yumyeongsan, Mt. Yeoninsan, Mt. Myeongjisan, Mt. Chungnyeongsan, and Mt. Unaksan. Mt. Yumyeongsan has deep valleys rich with water and scenic dragon pools scattered throughout. Many campgrounds have sprung up around Yumyeongsan Natural Recreation Forest. The Cheongpyeong lakeside area, spread along the Bukhangang River, is also famous as a hub for various water sports, as well as a popular date spot and driving course.

   Homyeong Lake Park

   Homyeong Lake is the upper reservoir of Korea's first pumped-storage power plant, and together with the striking scenery of Mt. Homyeongsan, the broad reservoir offers a beautiful view reminiscent of Cheonji Lake on Mt. Baekdusan. From Gapyeong-eup, you can take a city bus and get off at Sanyu-ri, or get off at Sancheon Station on the Cheongpyeong line, and hike up to Homyeong Lake, enjoying the surrounding scenery along the way. Along with Homyeong Lake, the valley stretching out below the mountain is a wonderful resting spot offering its own charms alongside the hike, and the view of Cheongpyeong Lake from the Homyeong Lake octagonal pavilion is superb as well.    Cheongpyeong Lakeside

   About a 10-minute drive from Cheongpyeong, Cheongpyeongho is an artificial lake created by damming the Bukhangang River to build Cheongpyeong Dam. The scenery formed by the surrounding mountains and the clear lake water is exceptionally beautiful, and being only 50km from Seoul, it developed early on as a popular day-trip destination. Besides the area upstream of the dam, Cheongpyeong also has many other riverside recreation areas downstream, along the Jojongcheon Stream — another tributary of the Bukhangang — including Anjeon Recreation Ground and Sanjang Recreation Ground along its banks.    Eobi Valley

   As you make your way to Yumyeongsan Recreation Forest, one of the best-known retreats in the greater Seoul metropolitan area, you'll come across a sign at the entrance to the recreation forest, to the left, reading 'Mt. Eobisan, Eobi Valley.' It's easy to mistake this for the Ipguji Valley at the foot of Yumyeongsan, but it's actually a completely separate stream flowing down from a different mountain. This is the cool valley wrapping around the foot of Mt. Eobisan, tucked away between Mt. Yongmunsan and Mt. Yumyeongsan. Today it may look like just a small stream, but it's said that in the past the valley was so abundant with fish that they seemed to fly through the water — hence the name Eobi (魚飛, 'flying fish').
