   Uljin Bongpyeong Silla Stele

   The Uljin Bongpyeong Silla Stele was discovered in 1988 by a villager while plowing a field. Having lain buried in the ground for so long, part of the inscription is worn away and difficult to read precisely, but it is presumed to have been erected in 524 (the 11th year of Silla King Beopheung). The stele uses a natural, unhewn stone, roughly trapezoidal in overall shape. The inscription is carved on only one face and contains about 400 characters. The script is mainly in the regular (haeseo) style influenced by the Northern Dynasties of China's Northern and Southern Dynasties period, though traces of the clerical (yeseo) style are also visible.
