The Beautiful Scenery Shaped by the Naeseongcheon Stream

The Naeseongcheon Stream, which rises in Bonghwa, Gyeongsangbuk-do, flows through Yecheon. Its beautiful sandy banks form a horseshoe-shaped 'water-turning village' at Hoeryongpo, and it joins the Geumcheon Stream and the Nakdong River at Samgang Tavern, from which point it flows on under the name Nakdong River. Samgang Tavern stands where the old Samgang ferry crossing once was, a place that still fully retains the traces of the people who once lived along the river, and Hoeryongpo offers a spectacular view from the Hoeryongpo Observatory near Jangansa Temple.

   Samgang Tavern served travelers crossing at Samgang Ferry, satisfying their hunger, and provided lodging and meals for peddler merchants, while sometimes also serving as a gathering place for poets and men of letters. Built around 1900, this small tavern shows a compact floor plan faithfully suited to its functions, giving it great rarity value as a record of architectural history, as well as historical and cultural significance in preserving a picture of the region's past.    Hoeryongpo

   Hoeryongpo is a place where the Naeseongcheon Stream, a tributary of the Nakdong River, curves around in the shape of a taegeuk (yin-yang) symbol, forming a sandy plain with a village settled upon it.    Chogangjeong Pavilion

   Chogangjeong Pavilion was built in 1582 (the 15th year of King Seonjo) by Chogan Gwon Mun-hae, author of Korea's first encyclopedia; it was later rebuilt by his descendants and is now designated Gyeongsangbuk-do Cultural Heritage Material No. 143.    Yongmunsa Temple

   Located at the foot of Sobaeksan about 15km north of Yecheon-eup, Yongmunsa is a renowned thousand-year-old temple founded in 870 (the 10th year of Silla King Gyeongdeok) by Master Duun, a native of this area. There are two accounts of how the temple got its name: one holds that when Goryeo's founder Taejo came to visit Master Duun in hopes of unifying the Three Han, he reached the village entrance and two blue dragons appeared atop a rock to guide him, and so the temple came to be called Yongmunsa ('Dragon Gate Temple'). In 1171 (the 1st year of Goryeo King Myeongjong), the placenta of a crown prince was buried on the peak to the left of the temple, and it was renamed Cheonggisa, before being renamed once more to its present name, Sobaeksan Yongmunsa (龍門寺).
