   Imgo Seowon

   Imgo Seowon is a royally chartered Confucian academy built in 1553 (the 8th year of King Myeongjong of Joseon) on Mt. Buraesan in Gocheon-ri, Imgo-myeon, by local Confucian scholars including No Su, Kim Eung-saeng, and Jeong Yun-ryang, to commemorate Poeun Jeong Mong-ju, a loyal official of the late Goryeo period. Having recently completed its first phase of sanctuary-restoration work, Imgo Seowon, dedicated to Jeong Mong-ju, now serves as a place where young students can learn history and culture. Visitors can trace the many footsteps of Jeong Mong-ju at the Poeun Relics Hall, and the Loyalty and Filial Piety Culture Center runs the Poeun Culture Academy, offering students the chance to experience loyalty, filial piety, and traditional scholar culture.    Eunhaesa Temple, one of Joseon's 31 head temples and one of Gyeongsangbuk-do's five great temples, remains today the head temple of District 10 of Korean Buddhism, and is a representative temple of the region. It is also famous among district head temples as a Mitado hall enshrining Amitabha Buddha as its principal image. Eunhaesa is a major head temple currently overseeing 39 branch temples, 5 mission halls, and 8 affiliated hermitages.
