Walking an Ancient Road with 2,000 Years of History

Yeongju is a town where the majestic Sobaeksan of the Baekdudaegan unfolds before you. Jungnyeong is the pass one must cross to travel from Yeongnam to the Hangang River basin, and it is the second-oldest road opened in Korea after Haneuljae. From Huibangsa Station to the Jungnyeong tavern is about 2.5km, a beautiful path holding 2,000 years of history and nature. Even the time spent quenching your thirst and filling your stomach at the tavern atop Jungnyeong Pass is a pleasure.

   Sudo-ri Traditional Village

   Sudo-ri in Munsu-myeon is a traditional village where beautiful nature and old houses have been preserved just as they were. True to its name, the Naeseongcheon Stream wraps around three sides of the village, which floats in the middle like an island. Reminiscent of Andong's Hahoe Village, this village has a silvery-white sandbar stretching along the curving river, while low hills forested with pine and evergreen trees embrace the river on the opposite bank.    Jungnyeong Pass

   Crossing the Sobaek mountain range, Jungnyeong is one of the three great gateway passes of Yeongnam, alongside Mungyeong Saejae and Chupungnyeong, and has long been ranked the foremost among them. Its summit lies at the narrow saddle connecting Sobaeksan's Second Yeonhwabong Peak and Dosolbong Peak, at an elevation of 689m. The Samguk Sagi records that it was opened in March of the 5th year of King Adalla (158 CE), and the Dongguk Yeoji Seungnam records that in King Adalla's 5th year, Jukjuk opened the road over Jungnyeong and died of exhaustion in the effort, and that a shrine honoring Jukjuk (Jukjuksa) stands atop the pass.
