Yeongyang is a land of literature that produced writers such as the poet Jo Ji-hun, the novelist Yi Mun-yol, and the poet Oh Il-do. Jusil Village, birthplace of Cheongnokpa poet Jo Ji-hun, and Deudeul Village, a single-clan village of the Jaeryeong Lee family and hometown of novelist Yi Mun-yol, draw a steady stream of visitors — not just for their literary heritage but also for their rich history and beautiful scenery.

   Yeongyang Deudeul Village

   Administratively located in Wolli-ri, Seokbo-myeon, Yeongyang County, Gyeongsangbuk-do, Deudeul Village takes its name from the meaning 'village on a hill.' Since 1640, when Seokgye Yi Si-myeong settled and developed the area while fleeing the Manchu invasion, his descendants of the Jaeryeong Lee clan have lived here as a single-clan village. In 1899, during the Joseon dynasty, a national hospital called Gwangjewon is said to have stood here, and the village is sometimes also called 'Wondeudeul' or 'Wolli.' MoreLess

   Jusil Village

   Located in Jugok-ri, Ilwol-myeon, Yeongyang County, Gyeongsangbuk-do, Jusil Village was settled in 1630 when Hoeun-gong Jo Jeon led his family here and began the single-clan village of the Hanyang Jo clan. The people of this village call themselves the Jusil Jo, tracing their lineage to Jo Jeon as their founding ancestor. The story of how the Hanyang Jo clan left Hanyang (Seoul) to settle here as a single-clan village begins with the Gimyo Sahwa purge of Jo Gwang-jo. After Jo Gwang-jo was driven out and Hoeun Jo Jeon fled Hanyang, wandering from place to place, he is said to have climbed Maebangsan behind this village and released a falcon, then built his house and settled where the falcon landed.
