A Camping Trip with Views of the South Sea

Facing the South Sea, Goseong is home to dinosaur footprints designated as a Natural Monument, and is also the site where Admiral Yi Sun-sin's Battle of Danghangpo took place during the Japanese invasions of Korea (Imjin War). At Sangjogam, visitors can encounter dinosaur footprints along a trail that runs along the coastal cliffs, and a Dinosaur Museum sits on a hill overlooking the sea. Danghangpo Tourist Site has various exhibition halls worth visiting together, including the Battle of Danghangpo Memorial Hall, the Goseong Natural History Museum, and the Turtle Ship Experience Hall. Both Sangjogam County Park and Danghangpo Tourist Site have auto-camping grounds, offering a relaxed camping experience alongside an enjoyable trip.

   Munsuam Hermitage

   Munsuam, a branch hermitage of Ssanggyesa Temple, the head temple of the 13th District of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism, is a hermitage on Muisan in Sangni-myeon, Goseong-gun, founded in 706 (the 5th year of King Seongdeok of Silla) by State Preceptor Uisang. Since its founding, the hermitage has produced many eminent monks as a place of ascetic practice, and thanks to its beautiful mountain scenery, it has been renowned since the Three Kingdoms period as one of the scenic sites of the eastern land (Haedong); it is also said that during the height of the Hwarang tradition, national sages of the Hwarang trained body and mind on this mountain. However, no record survives of its reconstruction history, and the hermitage standing today is a modern building rebuilt after the original was destroyed by Typhoon Sarah; there is also the reliquary stupa of Great Master Cheongdam (Yi Cheong-dam), built in 1973 with donations from lay followers to enshrine his sarira, which he attained through practice at this temple.    Danghangpo Tourist Site

   Danghangpo Tourist Site, located on Danghang Bay between Hoehwa-myeon and Donghae-myeon in Goseong-gun, is the site of Admiral Yi Sun-sin's great victory in the Battle of Danghangpo during the Imjin War, where in two separate engagements — in 1592 (the 25th year of King Seonjo) and 1594 (the 27th year) — a total of 57 Japanese ships were annihilated. To pass down to later generations the spirit of Admiral Yi's selfless devotion at the site of the Danghangpo victory, local residents pooled donations in 1981 to build the memorial site; it was designated a tourist site in 1984, developed, and opened to the public in November 1987.
