Meeting the Spectacular Scenery of the Winding Hantan River

Originating in Pyeonggang-gun in North Korea, the Hantan River crosses Cheorwon before joining the Imjin River, and along its narrow, long valley, a beautiful stretch of gorges and dramatic cliffs unfolds. Sundam Valley, in particular, forms a gorge section considered the most beautiful valley in Cheorwon. Jiktang Falls, known as Korea's Niagara Falls, and Sambuyeon Falls, which even appears in a jingyeong (true-view) landscape painting by Gyeomjae Jeong Seon, are waterfalls not to be missed in Cheorwon.

   Sambuyeon Falls

   Sambuyeon Falls is a three-tiered waterfall, 20m high, located in a quiet valley about 2.5km east of Cheorwon County Office, midway up Myeongseongsan. Its year-round flowing water and unusual rock formations blend with the surrounding scenery to create a mystical atmosphere; the falls drop at three separate points, whose shapes resemble cauldrons (bu), giving rise to the name Sambuyeon ('three cauldrons').
