A Journey Along the Jucheon River to Feel Nature's Mystery

Jucheon-myeon in Yeongwol takes its name from a legend of wine welling up like a spring. It is a place of beautiful scenery, wrapped by the winding Jucheon River. Following the river upstream brings you to the Yoseonam Potholes and Yoseonjeong Pavilion, both designated Natural Monuments, as well as Beopheungsa Temple — one of the Nine Mountain Seon Schools and also one of the Five Jeokmyeolbogung shrines enshrining the Buddha's sarira. The Hanbando Jihyeong (Korea Peninsula-shaped terrain), resembling the shape of our country, is also about 10km from Jucheon-myeon, making it worth visiting together.

   Yoseonjeong Pavilion and Yoseonam

   요선정, 요선암

   Yoseonjeong is a pavilion located in Mureung-ri, Suju-myeon, in front of which flows a clear valley stream; on a large flat rock along the riverbank is an inscription carved with the characters for 'Yoseonam.' It is said that during the Silla period, at the height of Buddhism's prominence, National Preceptors Cheolgam Doyun and Jinghyo Daesa opened Heungnyeong Seonwon at the foot of nearby Mt.    Beopheungsa Temple

   Beopheungsa Temple is famous as one of the Five Jeokmyeolbogung, shrines enshrining the Buddha's true sarira. It was founded around 647, in the reign of Queen Jindeok of Silla, by Great Master Jajang, and was originally named 'Sajasansa'; it was renamed Sajasan Jeokmyeolbogung during a reconstruction in 1939.
