   Yeongguksa Temple

   영국사

   Yeongguksa Temple is located on Cheontaesan (elevation 714.7m), at the southernmost tip of North Chungcheong Province, on the border with South Chungcheong Province. This area originally belonged to Yangsan-myeon, Okcheon-gun, but was incorporated into Yeongdong-gun in 1906. In 1914, through the merger of counties and townships, Yangnamil-somyeon and part of Nami-myeon were consolidated into Yangsan-myeon, which remains the case today. MoreLess

   Nangyesa Shrine

   Nangyesa Shrine, built in 1973, enshrines a portrait of Nangye. A statue and monument to Nangye greet visitors to the left of the shrine's entrance, and the path from the entrance to the shrine's outer gate is well landscaped, making the shady lawns beneath the trees a pleasant place to rest.    Birthplace of Nangye Park Yeon

   Nangye Park Yeon was born here on August 20, 1378, the 4th year of King U of Goryeo. He became a saengwon (licentiate) at age 28 in 1405, the 5th year of King Taejong, and passed the munkwa civil service examination at age 34 (1411). He went on to serve as a Gyori at Jiphyeonjeon (Hall of Worthies), Superintendent of Gwanseupdogwan, Byeoljwa of Akhak (music office), and Daejehak, among other posts. In 1456, the 2nd year of King Sejo's reign, his third son Gyeu was implicated in the plot to restore Danjong to the throne and narrowly escaped punishment; in recognition of his service to three kings, Park Yeon himself avoided disaster, retired from office, and returned here to live out his days, passing away on March 23, 1458 (the 4th year of King Sejo), at the age of 81.
