Climbing the Mountain Where the Golden Monkey Once Roamed

Mt. Geumwonsan carries the legend of a wild golden monkey that was sealed inside a rock. On its slopes lies Geumwonsan Natural Recreation Forest, home to Yuancheong Valley and Jijaemi Valley, making it an ideal place to camp and cool off during the height of summer. Amid this natural setting, you can also catch the scent of history at sites such as the rock-carved Buddha triad of Gaseobam in Jijaemi Valley and Munam, the largest single-boulder rock in the area.

   Mt. Geumwonsan (1,353m) and Mt. Gibaeksan lie on the border between Sangcheon-ri, Geochang-gun, and Sangwon-ri, Hamyang-gun, connected by a ridge, so both peaks can be climbed in a single hike. Mt. Geumwonsan's parent peak is Mt. Namdeogyusan. The Wolbongsan ridge, branching southeast from Namdeogyusan, splits into two lines, and the highest peak on the right-hand ridge toward Sumangnyeong is Mt. Geumwonsan. \nMoreLess
