Feeling the Refined Spirit of Old Scholars at Suseungdae

Suseungdae, known for its stunning scenery, is a premier attraction representing Geochang. During the Three Kingdoms period, when Baekje sent envoys to Silla, the place was called Susongdae, named out of worry that the envoys might not return. Later, in 1543, Toegye Yi Hwang heard the story behind the name Susongdae and felt it did not match the beauty of the place, so he recommended it be renamed Suseungdae (搜勝臺), and the name was changed accordingly. Around Suseungdae are Guyeon Seowon and Yosujeong Pavilion, as well as the old stone walls of Hwangsan Village and the historic house of scholar Jeong On -- both registered cultural properties -- making it an ideal place to enjoy exploring cultural heritage amid beautiful scenery.

   Suseungdae

   This is Guyeon-dong, in front of Hwangsan Village, Hwangsan-ri, Wicheon-myeon, Geochang-gun, Gyeongsangnam-do. During the Three Kingdoms period it lay on the border between Silla and Baekje; in the Joseon period it belonged to Anui-hyeon, and under Japanese colonial-era administrative reorganization it was incorporated into Geochang-gun, as it remains today.\nSuseungdae takes its earlier name, Susongdae (愁送臺), from the time when Baekje and Silla were in conflict during the Three Kingdoms period: this was the place where envoys were sent off from Baekje to Silla, and people worried the envoys might not return, so the site was named using the characters for \"worry\" (愁) and \"send off\" (送).\nLater, in 1543, the scholar Toegye Yi Hwang, visiting Geochang, heard the story behind the name Susongdae and felt the name did not do justice to the site's beauty, so he recommended it be changed to Suseungdae (搜勝臺), and the name was changed accordingly.MoreLess

   Hwangsan Traditional Hanok Village is a traditional hanok village located in Hwangsan-ri, Wicheon-myeon, Geochang-gun, Gyeongsangnam-do, across from Suseungdae National Tourist Resort.    House of Scholar Jeong On

   정온선생고택

   This house is the birthplace of the scholar Jeong On (1569-1632); his descendants rebuilt it in 1820, and it remains as it is today. \nPassing through the raised gate, you find the sarangchae (men's quarters) facing south. It has an L-shaped floor plan, six kan wide at the front and two-and-a-half kan deep, with an inner loft (naeru) projecting from the L-bend measuring one-and-a-half kan.
